GoHighLevel Funnel Builder Tutorial: How to Build Landing Pages That Actually Convert

GoHighLevel has a full funnel and landing page builder built in. For agencies and service businesses already on GHL, this means no need for a separate ClickFunnels or Leadpages subscription — the same platform that runs your CRM and automation can also host your lead capture pages, booking funnels, and sales pages.

The GHL funnel builder is functional and capable, but it rewards people who understand conversion principles as much as those who know the software. A technically perfect page built on the wrong structure will underperform a simpler page built on solid conversion fundamentals.

This tutorial covers both: how to use the GHL funnel builder and what makes a page actually convert. For the platform's other capabilities, GoHighLevel Review 2025 covers the full feature set.

Funnels vs Websites in GoHighLevel

GHL offers both a website builder and a funnel builder. They use the same underlying editor but serve different purposes.

A website has multiple pages with navigation, covers your full business, and is designed for general audiences exploring your brand. A funnel is a single-path experience designed to move a visitor toward one specific action. No navigation that could distract them. No links to other pages. One goal, one call to action, one next step.

For lead generation campaigns — running paid traffic to a landing page, promoting a lead magnet, booking consultation calls — use the funnel builder, not the website builder. The removal of distractions improves conversion rates.

Setting Up a Funnel

Navigate to Sites > Funnels in the GHL left sidebar. Click Add Funnel.

Give the funnel a name that identifies its purpose (AI Consultation Booking Funnel, Free Automation Audit Funnel, Lead Magnet Download). Set the domain — either a subdomain of your GHL-connected domain or a custom domain you connect through Settings > Domains, which the HighLevel support portal walks through including the DNS records the connection needs.

Each funnel has one or more steps. A simple lead generation funnel has two steps: the opt-in page (where the visitor converts) and the thank-you page (where they land after converting). A longer funnel might add a confirmation page, an upsell page, or a booking page between the opt-in and the thank-you.

Add your first step, name it (Opt-In, Landing Page), and choose a template or start from scratch.

The Page Editor

The GHL page editor is a drag-and-drop builder. Elements — text blocks, images, buttons, forms, video embeds, countdown timers, testimonials — are added from the sidebar and positioned on the canvas.

The editor works in sections. Each section spans the full width of the page and contains columns inside it. Elements sit inside columns. Understanding this hierarchy — section > column > element — prevents the frustration of trying to position things in ways the editor does not support.

For mobile responsiveness, GHL lets you switch to mobile view and adjust element properties specifically for that breakpoint. Always check the mobile view before publishing. A large share of paid traffic — often 60 to 70 percent — converts on mobile.

The Anatomy of a High-Converting Landing Page

This is the part most tutorials skip. The editor mechanics are learnable in an afternoon. The conversion principles take longer to internalise but matter more.

The headline does most of the work. The headline is the first thing a visitor reads and determines whether they read anything else. A good headline is specific, communicates a clear benefit or outcome, and speaks directly to the visitor's situation. "Free Consultation" is a weak headline. "Find Out How Much Time Your Business Is Losing to Manual Tasks in 30 Minutes" is a specific outcome statement that speaks to a specific problem.

Subheadline amplifies the headline. The subheadline adds context that the headline does not have room for. It should expand on the promise, add specificity, or address the primary objection a visitor has at the top of the page.

Social proof above the fold. Logos of recognisable clients, a testimonial from a credible source, a specific result with numbers. Visitors need a reason to trust you before they will give you their contact information. Social proof provides it without requiring them to read your claims about yourself.

The form should be short. Every field you add to a form reduces conversion rate. For a lead generation funnel, name and email is enough to start a relationship. Phone number is appropriate if you will actually call them quickly. Five fields is too many. Ask for more information after they have converted.

One call to action. One button on the page. Not three different offers, not a link to your website, not a navigation menu. One action. Make the button text specific: "Get My Free Automation Audit" performs better than "Submit".

Speed matters. Slow pages kill conversion rates. Keep images optimised (compressed, appropriate dimensions). Avoid heavy scripts. Test your page speed with Google PageSpeed Insights before running traffic to it, since it reports the field data Google actually holds on the page rather than a lab guess.

Connecting the Form to GHL Workflows

When a visitor submits the form on your funnel page, you want that submission to trigger automation immediately. In GHL, funnel form submissions are a native workflow trigger. GoHighLevel Automation for Agencies covers the underlying workflow patterns this connects into.

Go to Automation > Workflows and create a new workflow triggered by Form Submission. Select the specific funnel and form. From that trigger, build the sequence:

  1. Create or update the contact with submitted fields
  2. Add the appropriate tag (Source: Funnel, Lead Magnet: Automation Audit, etc.)
  3. Send the immediate confirmation email or deliver the lead magnet
  4. Start the follow-up SMS sequence
  5. Add the contact to the relevant pipeline stage
  6. Notify the assigned rep

All of this fires within seconds of the form submission. The visitor gets an immediate confirmation. The team gets immediate visibility. The contact is in the CRM and the automation is running before the visitor has even navigated away from the thank-you page.

A/B Testing in GHL Funnels

GHL supports split testing at the funnel step level. You can create two versions of a page and have GHL split traffic between them, then compare conversion rates.

To set up a split test, open the funnel step and look for the A/B testing option. Add a variant, make the change you want to test (headline, button colour, form length, hero image), and set the traffic split percentage.

Test one variable at a time. If you change the headline and the button text and the hero image simultaneously, you cannot attribute a performance difference to any specific change. One change per test, run until you have statistical significance, then implement the winner and test the next variable.

For most service business funnels with moderate traffic, a meaningful A/B test takes two to four weeks to reach statistical significance. Patience here produces compound improvements in conversion rate over time.

Funnel Templates Worth Starting From

GHL has a template library accessible when creating a new funnel step. The quality varies, but a few template categories are genuinely useful starting points:

VSL (video sales letter) funnels. A hero video above the fold with a form or a CTA button below. Effective for offers that benefit from explanation. The video does the selling; the page is just the frame.

Lead magnet funnels. A simple two-column layout: offer description on the left, form on the right. Clean, minimal, conversion-focused.

Booking funnels. An embedded GHL calendar as the conversion element. The visitor books directly on the page without navigating away.

For any template, the first thing to do is replace all placeholder text with your actual copy and remove any elements that are not serving a specific purpose. Templates often have too many elements. Simplify.

Tracking and Analytics

GHL shows page views and conversion rates per funnel step. Review these after launching any funnel and running meaningful traffic to it.

For more detailed analytics — traffic sources, heatmaps, session recordings — embed Google Analytics or Microsoft Clarity via the custom code section in funnel settings. These tools tell you not just what the conversion rate is but where visitors are dropping off and what they are doing on the page before they leave.

The Website Conversion Analyzer is useful for auditing a funnel page before driving traffic to it — it identifies common conversion friction points that can be fixed before they cost you leads.

Building Your First Funnel

For a service business just starting with GHL funnels, the highest-value first funnel to build is a consultation booking funnel: a landing page with a clear offer for a free consultation or audit, a short form or direct calendar embed, and an automated confirmation sequence.

This funnel has one job: get a qualified prospect on your calendar. Everything else is secondary. Build it simply, test the headline and offer with real traffic, and optimise from data rather than assumptions. Getting this exact page-to-workflow handoff right is a recurring part of the GHL builds I do for agency and service business clients.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will my GHL funnel pages rank in Google?

Rarely, and it is the wrong job to give them. A funnel page is built for a single conversion path, which means thin copy, no internal linking and no navigation, and those are the exact things organic ranking depends on. Funnels are for traffic you send: paid ads, email, a link in a video description. Put your ranking effort into a proper website or blog and let the funnel do what it is good at. If you find yourself adding paragraphs of keyword content to a landing page to help it rank, you are damaging the conversion rate to chase traffic the page will not get anyway.

Can I put a funnel on my main domain without breaking my website?

Yes, but be deliberate about the path. Connect the domain in GHL and give the funnel its own path, so it sits at yourdomain.com/audit rather than at the root. Pointing a funnel at the bare root replaces your homepage for everyone who arrives there, including people who typed the domain in directly. The safer arrangement for most service businesses is the main site at the root and funnels living on paths beneath it, or on a dedicated subdomain such as go.yourdomain.com if the site is hosted elsewhere entirely.

I do not have the traffic for a proper A/B test. What should I do instead?

Stop splitting and start rewriting. A test needs a few hundred conversions per variant before the result means anything, and a service funnel getting a handful of leads a week will never get there before the offer or the season changes underneath it. At that volume you learn more from watching session recordings, reading the words prospects use on discovery calls and making one substantial change at a time. Small tests need big traffic; big changes show up even in small numbers.

Bot submissions are filling my CRM. How do I stop them?

Turn on the captcha in the form settings first, since most of it is unsophisticated scraping that stops there. For what gets through, add a filter step at the top of your workflow: check that the phone number has a plausible length, that the email domain resolves, and that the name field is not identical to the email field. Route anything that fails to a Suspect tag rather than into the pipeline. The cost of bot submissions is not the contact record, it is the automated SMS and email you send to a fake address, which damages the sending reputation you spent weeks building.

Why is my GHL page still slow after I compressed the images?

Because the builder output carries weight you did not add. Every section, tracking script, embedded font and third-party pixel loads on top of your content, and a page assembled from a template often ships elements you are not using but never removed. Delete unused sections rather than hiding them, cut the page to one font family with two weights, and remove any pixel you are not actively reading data from. If it is still slow after that, the hero image is usually being served far larger than it displays.
