Why I reach for n8n over Zapier on every new build

Self-hosted, full code control, and a free tier that actually scales. Here's the decision tree I use.

For simple one-step automations, Zapier is often enough. For production systems that need branching, retries, custom code, and observability, I usually reach for n8n first.

The deciding factor is control: n8n lets me keep workflow logic visible, versionable, and close to the business process instead of hiding critical behavior inside brittle connector chains.
