Rates default to US list pricing. Twilio prices by destination country, so check your own route before you commit to a number — UK, India and Nigeria all differ sharply from the US.

The segment multiplier is where estimates usually go wrong. A message of 200 characters bills as two segments, and a single emoji switches the whole message to UCS-2 encoding — 70 characters per segment instead of 160, so a short message can suddenly cost three times what you budgeted.

Twilio bills per segment, per minute and per number, and the surprise is almost always in the segments. Enter your volumes and your own per-unit rates to get a monthly estimate broken down line by line.

What this tool does

Enter your monthly volumes — outbound and inbound messages, outbound and inbound voice minutes, how many phone numbers you rent, how many carrier lookups you run — along with the per-unit rates that apply to your account and destination country. The calculator returns a monthly total with every line itemised.

Every rate is an input rather than a hard-coded figure. Twilio's pricing varies by country, by number type, by volume commitment and over time, so a calculator that baked in a rate would be wrong for most people and out of date for everyone else. Take your figures from Twilio's own SMS pricing and voice pricing pages for your destination, then paste them in.

A worked example

An appointment-reminder system sends two messages per booking — a confirmation and a day-before reminder — across 1,200 bookings a month. Each message is 178 characters after the merge fields expand, which is two GSM-7 segments.

The volume that matters is therefore 4,800 segments, not 2,400 messages. Enter the message count and the average segment count separately and the calculator does that multiplication for you, which is precisely the step people skip when estimating from a rate card.

Add one local number, a modest amount of inbound voice for callbacks, and a lookup on every new contact, and you have a defensible monthly figure rather than a guess.

Registration fees One-off and recurring, by programme

Where people go wrong

Estimating in messages instead of segments. A 200-character message is two segments. One emoji makes it three. Check yours with the SMS segment calculator before you build the estimate.

Forgetting inbound. Replies cost money, and an opt-out flow invites them. So does a two-way conversation design.

Missing registration and compliance costs. In several markets, sending application-to-person messaging requires registering a campaign or a sender ID, which carries its own fees. These are not in the per-message rate.

Assuming voice rounds down. Voice minutes round up. A hundred 20-second calls bill as a hundred minutes, not thirty-three.

Testing on trial credit and budgeting from it. Trial accounts have restrictions and a message prefix that changes the segment count. Twilio documents the differences in its free trial guide.

Ignoring the number inventory. Ten numbers rented for a campaign that ended last quarter is a small recurring cost nobody reviews.

FAQ

Why does the calculator not include current Twilio rates?

Because they differ by country, number type and account, and they change. Hard-coded rates in a calculator are a liability. Copy yours from Twilio's pricing pages and the estimate will be accurate for your situation rather than for a generic one.

Does this cover Twilio Flex or Segment?

No. It covers the programmable messaging, voice, number and lookup lines, which is what most automation builds consume. Contact-centre seat licensing is priced on a different model entirely.

How accurate is the estimate?

As accurate as your volume assumptions. The arithmetic is exact; the uncertainty is in whether you really send 4,800 segments a month. Model a high case as well as an expected one.

What about carrier surcharges?

Some destinations add a carrier fee on top of Twilio's rate. If yours does, add it into the per-segment rate you enter rather than treating it as a separate line.

Is WhatsApp priced the same way?

No — WhatsApp bills per conversation window, not per message. Use the WhatsApp API pricing calculator.

If the messages are part of a voice build, Twilio Voice Setup for AI Agents covers connecting a number to an agent, and GoHighLevel SMS Automation covers the sequence design. For the agent side of the cost, use the voice AI cost per minute calculator.
